What To Expect When You Stop Using

A Safe Beginning

For many individuals dependent on alcohol and/or drugs, the idea of quitting can be intimidating. Not only does the client have to surrender that which provides comfort, but he or she must also undergo a process of detoxification that can be uncomfortable and dangerous if not properly supervised. Therefore, it is imperative that this process is managed by an experienced medical professional so as to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the patient during this delicate phase of recovery. Detoxification services are never provided on the property of Sober Souls.

When the addict ceases to take a substance that he or she has become physically dependent on, the body often fights back – it has become, over the period of active addiction, acclimated to the chemical imbalance of prolonged intoxication. Consequently, patients often experience unpleasant side effects during this transitional phase. That’s why we provide you or your loved one with experienced and attentive medical professionals to help ease and control this process.

Depending on the type of drug being removed from a client’s system, detoxification and the subsidence of unpleasant symptoms can take between a few days and a few weeks. During this period, clients are encouraged to relax and, importantly, start a nutritious diet to help replace the toxic chemicals built up in the body and speed up the detoxification process.

Towards the end of detoxification clients are encouraged to enter into the next phase in their recovery. Safely entering the initial period of abstinence is not enough to ensure long-term sobriety. The newly sober addict most often feels cravings, emotional instability, impulsivity and existential insecurity. Clients are strongly encouraged to enter residential treatment, where an individualized program addresses common issues and builds a strong foundation for long-term recovery. As noted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “medically assisted detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug abuse”(NIDA).  Again, Sober Souls provides referrals for treatment providers that are located around the San Fernando Valley that are licensed facilities and treatment providers by the State of California.

Sober Souls has referrals for a number of detox facilities that provide all levels of detoxification, from a social model to a hospital based medical model.  Sober Souls is able to coordinate a client’s detox services prior to admission into our sober living environment if needed.  An experienced medical professional that we have as our referral base are all fully licensed and Board Certified medical professionals.
